It is located in the valley of Ounila, south of Telouet, stronghold of Glaoui, valley which was a traditional crossing point of the caravans linking Marrakech south of the Sahara. This is a striking example of traditional southern Moroccan architecture, on the side of a hill at the top of which was a collective attic (an agadir). The village is a group of earthen buildings surrounded by walls, the ksar, which is a type of traditional pre-Saharan habitat. The houses are grouped within its defensive walls reinforced by corner towers. Some of its dwellings seem to be small castles with their high towers decorated with raw brick designs.
The oldest constructions date from the seventeenth century. The site would have been one of the many trading posts that linked Saharan Africa to Marrakech – you can still see a fondouk.
We’ll have our lunch. Then we will continue our trip to visit some studios where famous and known films were turned.
