Tinghir is located between the mountains of the High Atlas and those of Saghro, it is perched at over 1300m altitude with peaks up to 3000m altitude to the north.
At the end of Todgha gorges, the Assif of the same name is difficult to spawn a passage on the southern slopes of the High Atlas (Tizguine), then leads into the great plain connecting the region of Ouarzazate Tafilalet to meander about twenty kilometers to the Wadi Ferkla.
The palm grove of Todgha, very dense and extensive, consists only of the two banks of the Assif Todgha; it is irrigated by a network of pipes called in Berber tirgwin (sg targa). Absorbed by many of these irrigation channels, water does not usually reach Ferkla, a tributary of the Gheris, except during heavy floods.

The city of Meknes takes its name from the Amazigh Meknassa tribe from the Aures of Algeria who immigrated to Morocco in the 10th century by undermining the idrissid authority. The members of this tribe are called the Imknassen plural, Ameknas is the singular. Ameknas means in Tamazight the warrior or the fighter. Moreover Amazigh activists call it Ameknas. In 711, several members of the tribe took part in the conquest of Andalusia alongside Tariq ibn Ziyad and settled north of Cordoba. Towards the eleventh century, they founded the Aftasid dynasty in Badajoz.
One group takes part in the Maysara uprising and adopts kharidjite Islam. They founded the emirate of Sijilmassa, at the northern limit of the Sahara. By allying with the Caliphate of Cordova, they are able to fight the attacks of the Fatimids. However, when the chief Meknassa Al-Mutazz allies with them, the Meknassa are driven out of Sijilmassa by the Maghraouas, allies of the Umayyads.
Another group joins the Fatimids against the Umayyads; hunt the Salihids of northern Morocco in 917. However, they do not maintain their resistance against the Maghraouas. After several permanent battles in northern Morocco, the Meknassa weakened by the struggle are defeated by the Almoravids in the eleventh century and come to settle in Meknes.
The city was also called Mequines or Mequinez in French. Thus Voltaire wrote: “I wish that the earthquake would have engulfed this wretched Acadia rather than Lisbon and Mequines. (Letter to François Tronchin Voltaire, 17566).
